Switching Over To DMG
· by Kjell
A quick one tonight. I moved the distribution format from a zip to a proper DMG. Not glamorous, but it matters more than I thought.
The zip flow was fine on my machine, but I've been watching first-run experiences on other people's setups and there's always that tiny moment of friction - quarantine flags, unfamiliar unzip behavior, the app ending up in Downloads instead of Applications. DMG fixes all of that. You get the nice drag-to-Applications window, the signing chain survives the download, and nobody has to think about where the app should live.
I spent most of the evening on the build pipeline, making sure the notarization step still runs cleanly, sparkle appcast, and everything downstream of the release step still works.
A lot of rewiring for what looks externally like a no-op, but my future self will thank me every time I cut a new build. Sometimes the most useful work is the invisible kind. Tomorrow, back to actual features.
